DeMEC is trying to go further in jewellery design proposing a new range of jewels called jewellery with a purpose.

For this DeMEC is using a very special palm seed discovered over 300 years ago in the Amazon jungle known as vegetable ivory [Phytelephas Macrocarpa]. The colour, hardness and density of these seeds are very similar to animal ivory, making them the only natural and 100% sustainable alternative for ivory, helping to save the elephants and preserving the rain forests, at the same time.

But before it can be worked, the vegetable ivory seeds must be hardened by drying naturally. This can take from 2 to 20 years; the older the seed the more valuable it becomes.

DeMEC devised a classification based on age to create the different collections: GENTEEL, young seeds less than 10 years old used for costume jewellery and PRINCESS, seeds more than 10 years old used for fine jewellery.

The Princess Collection (in sterling silver) can be found in all of our retailers within the UK or accompanied by the Genteel Collection in the London markets of Greenwich and Spitalfields. A list of retailers can be found on our Outlets page.
